You Said What?!

Here are some common, everyday figures of speech and phrases we use, that actually come from the Bible.

  • "A drop in the bucket" comes from Isaiah 40:15.
    "Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket;
    they are regarded as dust on the scales;
    he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust." (NIV)
  • "Can a Leopard change its spots?" comes from Jeremiah 13:23.
    "Can an Ethiopian change his skin or a leopard its spots?
    Neither can you do good who are accustomed to doing evil. (NIV)
  • "A man after my own heart" is found in two places of the Bible: Samuel 13:14, and Acts 13:22.
    Acts 13:22 "After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him:
    ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ (NIV)
  • "By the skin of my teeth" comes from Job 19:20.
    "I am nothing but skin and bones;
    I have escaped only by the skin of my teeth." (NIV)
  • "Eat, drink, and be merry" comes from Ecclesiastes 8:15.
    "Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun." (KJV)
  • "Gave up the ghost" comes from Acts 12:23.
    "And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory:
    and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost." (KJV)
  • "The writing is on the wall" originates from Danial 5:5-6.
    "5 Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. The king watched the hand as it wrote. 6 His face turned pale and he was so frightened that his legs became weak and his knees were knocking." (NIV) It was then used figuratively later on, to foretell danger, even when there was no wall or writing around.
